Periwinkle ruffled her pastel blue feathers, black eyes scanning the little patch of forest that remained in front of her and the yellow-and-blue expanse that replaced the familiar, dark green leaves. Lifting her wings in preparation, the stubborn blue jay dove from her perch, zooming through the last stretch of trees before entering the odd terrain. Periwinkle flew closer to the sandy ground, feeling the need to examine what might live in such a place. When her wings sent a few of the grains flying into the air, the bird cursed under her breath, lifting her wings to put more of a distance between her and the strange floor. Who would even think of living in a place like this? Full of this yellow stuff and that irritating salty smell...
