  • Rainfur purred at the little kits. "Goodnight." He mewed, licking each one on the top of the head.

  • The little kits purred. Mouseclaw curled up in her nest, the little kits curled up in the curve of her belly. Mouseclaw purred happily.

  • Rainfur sighed, he was content with the life he was living. He yawned, pushing himself to his paws and stumbling towards his nest. He was asleep before he even hit the moss.

He awoke to tiny paw steps and whispering, and he immediately knew who. "Whoa! Look at Splashheart!" Heatherkit exclaimed quietly. But he could smell only Stonekit and Heatherkit. "Shush! You know what we are here for!" He meowed. Rainfur pricked his ears. "Of course! What other chance will we get to sleep in the warriors den!" Heatherkit retorted. Soon he felt them squish their bodies into the curve of his belly, and he had to hold his breath to stop himself from purring.

  • Mouseclaw woke up and looked down at her kits, er, kit. Only Shadekit was sleeping soundly in the curve of her belly. Mouseclaw prodded her awake. "Shadkit," Mouseclaw meowed. The kit yawned and blinked at her mother. "Where are the others?" she asked gently. "They said they were going to sleep in the warriors den tonight." she answered sleepily. Mouseclaw sighed heavily. "Come on, let's go get them," Mouseclaw grumbled and helped Shadekit to her feet. The padded out of the nursery and into the night air. She could smell Heatherkit's and Stonekit's scent. She padded into the nursery and saw the two small kits curled by their father. She padded over to them careful not to wake the other warriors. "Come on you two, you need to sleep in the nursery." Stonekit mewed in protest, "But we want to sleep in the warriors den!" Mouseclaw purred. "You'll be able to sleep in the warriors den one moon, when you three become warriors yourself." She herded the kits with her tail back to the nursery, where she curled up, her kits laying in a bundle of grey, brown, and black fur.

  • Rainfur felt Mouseclaw usher the kits away, and he purred as he heard protests all the way to the nursey. He stretched his jaws in an enormous yawn, reaching out his forepaws in a stretch. He curled into a tight ball, closing his eyes.

It seemed only heartbeats later when Gorgeclaw was poking him awake with his paws. Rainfur pushed himself to his paws and stretched, padding to the fresh-kill pile. He spotted a nice plump water vole on the pile, Mouseclaw's favorite. He picked it up and padded into the nursery, pushing past the trailing brambles. He set down the water vole and licked her head, waking her. "I'm going on dawn patrol and thought you could use the food." He meowed. "I'll see you when I get back." He mewed quietly.

  • Mouseclaw yawned and looked up at Rainfur purring. "Thanks," she mewed dipping her head. She began to eat the vole while the kits begin to stir awake.

  • Rainfur hurried out of the den and caught up to the patrol. "About time." Splashheart meowed micheviously. "Sorry I care." Rainfur teased his denmate. Splasheart just shook his head, smiling. The patrol carried on, checking bushes, borders, everything. Rainfur pricked his ears as a rank scent hit his jaws. "Bear!" He raised the alarm call and the patrol got in a circle. The huge brown creature lumbered in from Rainfur's side. He slammed his head into it's side, feeling it shift. He got back and leapt onto the spine of the creature. He felt it's claws grip his side, but he fought. He fought as much as he could before he gave into claws. The large paws threw him a few feet, and he could feel blood all over him. He struggled to his paws and ran feebly to the bear. He leapt for it's eyes, but again got knocked away. This time, just inches from the stomping paws, he bit hard into one of them. With cats all over it, the bear gave up and ran into the woods, whimpering. Rainfur fell to his side, and Splashheart and Eaglewing helped him up, dragging him to camp, With Yellowpaw and Fallowfern supporting Creektail. All of the bore scratches, reminding him of his own, and he let himself slip into darkness.

  • Mouseclaw smelt blood when the patrol got back. She poked her head out of the nursery and saw Rainfur, covered in blood. She let out a shrill wail of fear and bounded over to him. "What happened?" she demanded, her kits bounding after her.

  • "Bear." Eaglewing whispered. Rainfur rolled his head and groaned, trying to see what was going on, but he couldn't get his head up halfway. He smelled Mouseclaw, and he didn't want to worry her. He tried to stand, but his legs gave out. "He fought pretty hard." Splashheart meowed sadly.

  • The kits bounced around Rainfur and the others. "What's a bear? Is it big? Did it hurt daddy? Will daddy be okay?" The kits squeaked. Mouseclaw gathered them with her tail. "Let him rest, he'll be fine. You can go see him later when he is feeling better." she meowed gently and herded them back to her nest, glancing back sadly at Rainfur.

  • Eaglewing and Splasheart dragged the wounded warrior to the medicine cat den.

  • "Daisyfur? Can you watch the kits?" Mouseclaw asked when she got in the nursery. "Of course," Daisyfur meowed. Shadekit bounded over to Mouseclaw. "Why can't we come see daddy?" she protested. "You'll be able to see him when he's feeling better," Mouseclaw responded gently. Daisyfur gathered the kit with her tail, hurt in her eyes knowing the sad truth about Shadekit. Mouseclaw left the nursery and headed to the medicine cat den. She sat next to her mate's nest worry filling her eyes.

  • The medicine cat turned as Mouseclaw came in. "Wash him off." She meowed. "I'll be right back with some fresh herbs." She meowed as she headed off.

  • Voletail came back in with her jaws stuffed with herbs. She sorted them and started working on Rainfur calmly, but her eyes betrayed fear. Roseheart and her mother rushed in. "Rainfur? Rainfur!" Roseheart meowed anxiously.

  • Roseheart hesitantly backed up, never taking her eyes off of her brother. "Please please please." She pleaded. "Let him survive." She whispered.

  • Mouseclaw rested her tail on Rainfur's worried sister's shoulder. "Don't worry," she whispered, "He'll live." Mouseclaw had no idea why she was so confident that Rainfur was going to make it. She should be worried like Roseheart, but she wasn't. Why?

  • Voletail and meanwhile beckoned Fernpelt over and they were both working furiously on the injured warrior.

  • Mouseclaw took a step forward and gently touched noses with Rainfur. She laid down next to him, she ignored the looks she got from Voletail, she refused to leave her mate like this.
