  • Mik opened his mouth as if to argue, then closed it. He hadn't thought about the fact that they should keep watch, and even if he had, he certainly wouldn't have suggested she go first. It didn't seem like she was giving him much of an option, though. After years of dealing with a girl as stubborn and defiant as Ari, he knew better than to object.


    "Alright," he said. "But wake me up as soon as you start to get tired."

  • [font=times new roman]She nodded, waving him off and looking away. She stared at the moon, wondering if Jasiri was okay, hoping that one day everything would be better. And if it didn't end up getting better, she would have a friend, wouldn't she? She was surprised that he had become a friend to her so quickly, especially with her stubborn personality and somewhat threatening look to her. She had threatened to hunt him down the first few moments of their friendship and then saved him from two bikers. Maybe she would have been proud of herself if she was back home with her family; they would have praised her wildly, maybe even had a small festival.


    She shrugged, wishing away her emotions. Don't dwell, she reminded herself, groping around the dirty earth and finding a tree she could lean against. Elspeth shut her eyes, relaxing, but keeping her guard up just in case.

  • Mik fought to stay awake for a few minutes, still uncertain about letting Elspeth stay awake and keep watch. Finally, unable to hold it off for any longer, he closed his eyes, rolled over, and allowed himself to fall into a deep sleep.
