Monster Attack
“Monster attack!” Sirens wailed and lights flashed. I looked around, confused and bewildered. Mothers carrying their whimpering babies. Children crying, reaching for their parents. Fratic people searching for their family. A woman bellowing instructions to everyone.
A thought jolted me awake: I had to find Robbie. Robbie was my four-year-old little brother, who was my favorite person in the world. He was so adorable, so helpless, that my first instinct is to seize him and run.
Monsters rarely attacked our city. We were in our apartment, just me and Robbie, when we heard the first ear-piercing scream. I carried the half-awake Robbie on my shoulders and fled. Then I heard its roar. It’s so close by! My instinct yelled at me. My heart leapt, and I quickened my pace.
We were so close to getting away, when Robbie asked, “Where are my animals?” Robbie loved his stuffed animals. He’d go everywhere with them. I said gently, “No we have to go. Scary monster!” “No! My animals!” Robbie shrieked, insisting. We looked back to the direction of our apartment, and I sighed, “Okay.”
I prayed and begged silently as we hurried back to our home. “Let us be safe,” I begged. Robbie was nearly in tears. We raced to our home and wrenched open the door. Robbie rushed toward our bedroom, where his animals were kept.
Then I saw it. The monster. It was horrifyingly enormous, with bloodshot eyes. Its razor-sharp fangs and claws glinted in the pale moonlight. Add one more feature: it had a horn – a long, silver horn, even sharper than its fangs or claws. I shook with terror, and shivered.
I watched it, curious. It wasn’t glaring at me; its gaze was in the direction of our pedroom. Sheer rage took over; I grabbed the first thing I could reach – a cutter – and stabbed at the monster.
A feral snarl followed as the monster changed focus, but I was ready. I charged at it with hatred boiling over me. I was willing to die to protect Robbie; I’d rather die than see the monster harm my little brother. When the final blow came, I was expecting it.
Time froze. Everything was in slow motion. I heard Robbie’s shocked scream of “Lydia!”, and my gaze met Robbie’s, his emerald eyes brimming with tears. I told him “I love you” with my eyes, and closed my eyes for the very last time.

THE STORY
Long ago, a young cat and a young bat met. They were both lost, so they became friends. An angel named Fawntail found them, and took great care of them. She slowly became their adopted mother. She loved them, and they loved her.
However, her absolute favorite son was the cat, Sone. He was fair and peaceful, while the bat, Greyear, was mischievous and a jealous cheater. Time passed, and the ‘brothers’ grew up.
Soon it was the time for Fawntail to leave them. Fawntail left, and Greyear blamed Sone. They squarrelled about this, and in the end, Greyear decided that they were now enemies. Greyear was older than Sone, so he took charge and banished Sone.
Sone fled, agreeing with Greyear that he was to blame, but Fawntail left him a note – that she left was not because of him.
----- THREE YEARS LATER -----
In the three past years, both brothers made their own lives. Greyear found Katie, a female bat, and fell in love with her. He changed his name to Blackmask, as he wore a black mask; he turned evil…
Meanwhile, Sone was starting to build a new life. Fawntail had left a younger angel named Peadrop with him as a companion. Depressed, Sone began eating lavender; then learned that lavender could make him fast as thunder. He changed his name to Arrowflight, as he was as fast and as swift as an arrow’s flight.
Katie bore a baby bat, called Shadowess. Shadowess had poor eyesight, but she had brilliant hearing. As Shadowess grew up, Blackmask taught his daughter to be the best spy for him to wipe out Arrowflight. He planted the seed of evil in his daughter’s heart, althogh it didn’t sprout.
When Shadowess was 5, she was already the best spy in the world. Blackmask, her father let her go to Arrowflight’s home and to eliminate him.
“Bye, Papa!” Shadowess said excitedly.
Then Shadowess flew pass a hill and a hill, and finally she arrived at a tree near Arrowflight’s home, and pretended that she was an orphan. Arrowflight took pity on Shadowess, and took her in.
“What is your name? “asked Arrowflight softly and gently.
“My…name is…Shadowess,” said she, afraid to talk with her enemy.
Soon, Shadowess and Arrowflight bonded. She learned more stuff about him, and he grew to trust her. She felt bad about secretly spying on him for her father, so one day, she told him the truth, “Arrowflight, I have to confess. I am the daughter of Blackmask, a.k.a. Greyear. He has trained me to spy – to spy on you. All the time I was collecting info, and giving them to Papa - for planning his revenge against you.” That was all she said in one breath. Then she begged, “Will you forgive me?”
Arrowflight forgave her, and praised her for being brave enough to confess. Shadowess explained to him all her father’s great planning, like what time to attack, what place to fight at, what things to lure Arrowflight, etc etc…
Meanwhile, sitting on a branch of the secret meeting place/tree, Blackmask was blissfully unaware of all happening, including that his ‘loyal’ daughter giving away all their secrets and plans. Everything was going on well, he thought, a wicked smile on his face. Soon he will have his revenge – and restrain his former glory.
Shadowess was due to come back at two thirty. Blackmask put on his mask, and anxiously glanced at his watch. It was two forty-five! He began to feel suspicious, worried and nervous at the same time. Where was she? If she didn’t appear now, all the careful and detailed planning – all his hope blossomed – shattered. Broken. Nothing. They were supposed to arrive at the near Arrowflight’s home at three fifteen. He felt a desperate growl escape his throat.
At three thirty, Shadowess still didn’t arrive yet, so Blackmask sloped off – back to their home.
As he was approaching their home – their sacred tree, two familiar voices haunted him. One said, “Papa, it took you so long to get here.” The other said, “Seriously! Greyear, or Blackmask - whatever - it took you so long to figure out your ‘super loyal’ spy-daughter is helping your enemy!” Blackmask looked up, and saw two faces he didn’t want to see: Shadowess - setting up her steel glare – and Arrowflight – smiling slyly.
Slowly, realization started to sink in. Outraged, Blackmask growled at Arrowflight, “What did you do with my daughter?” Shadowess hissed back, “He did nothing to me! He just showed me the evilness in you, and helped me push away the seed of evil you planted in my heart when I was born. He didn’t do anything I didn’t ask for.”
Fake tears rolled down Blackmask’s face, as his daughter reached to brush them away. He used his meekest tone and looked at them, with fake sorryness and sincereness in his eyes, “Arrowflight, I’m so sorry! You too, Shadowess. I confess that I have been evil.” Then they all smiled warmly - although Blackmask’s smile was fake. Then he caught his daughter’s wrist and and twisted it.
He smiled again, wickedly, as his daughter almost whimpered from pain. Arrowflight screamed, “No!” They spun into battle. Blackmask gave Shadowess a wink, and fought. At the meantime, Shadowess dug a hol, pretending to be helping Blackmask. Suddenly, Arrowflight went limp and backed off. Blackmask smiled again, but suddenly, Arrowflight’s claws sailed swiftly to Blackmask’s throat - Arrowflight had Blackmask pinned down, and pushed him into the hole Shadowess had dug. They buried him alive, knowing the dirt could block every ounce of oxygen.
After Blackmask died, all was peaceful. Arrowflight and Shadowess lived together, - happily ever after. They each craved for the other’s existance, loved each other with each ounce of their living.
