    Character Name: Harper Clara Ashwell

    Age: 13

    Birthday: April 5

    Gender: Female

Likes: Horses, math, the outdoors, old buildings, and thinking.

Dislikes: Mice, vegetables, small spaces, being told what to do, most other people, and the sun.

    Favorite Color: Teal

Appearance: Harper has long, reddish-blonde hair that she keeps tied in a long braid. She has a thin, pointed face and very pale skin. Her eyes are a dark blue color. She usually wears blue jeans and polo shirts. She is about five feet tall and weighs about eighty pounds. She is fairly thin because of the lack of food. She has a tiny birthmark shaped like a horseshoe on the bottom of her right wrist, which she believes is unlucky, so she hides it with a bracelet made of an old stirrup leather.

Personality: Harper is shy and mysterious. She is thoughtful, resourceful, and often unpredictable. She has a hot temper, and low self esteem. She tries to be sweet and nice, but sometimes she can't. She is impulsive and a quick thinker. She does not like to be told what to do, which generally makes her unhelpful, but she isn't lazy. She is very independent and stubborn.

History: Harper was born on a ranch in Colorado, but was sent to live with her grandparents on their farm in Kentucky at the age of four under unknown circumstances. Her grandparents shut her inside and did not let her leave except for school. Other than that they treated her kindly, but she was still unhappy because she missed horses. One night when she was eight years old she managed to sneak out and stay in the barn while her grandparents were on errands. When her grandparents came back they found her asleep in the barn and got very angry. They locked her in the basement and kept her home from school. Her grandparents started to homeschool her, so that they would not get in trouble. One day she overheard a phone conversation with her parents. Her grandparents explained to them that she was a rotten, evil child and was on her way to juvenile detention and it was unsafe for her to leave the house. By then she was ten and a half. The next night she ran away when her grandparents were out grocery shopping. She hid in the field behind the house for three days without being found. On the third day her grandparents packed up many of their belongings and left. Harper went to stay in the barn and lived there caring for the horses until she was twelve. Then the police came to search for her and took the horses to a nearby animal shelter. She followed the police and started living in the basement of the shelter, taking food out of the volunteers lunches to survive. One day one of the shelter workers found her and threatened to call the police. Harper convinced her to let her stay, under the circumstances that she spoke to the shelter owners about it and did all of the work that the volunteers had to do. Harper agreed, happily, and lived at the shelter from then on, but she still worried and wondered about her parents and grandparents.
