Darkfang jumped to her feet, waking from a nightmare shes had over and over about Graykit and Lightkit dieing and being crushed by the rocks. She hated having it, but she couldn't control it. The dark gray tabby cat shook her head and stalked away into her secret tunnel and entered her little cave and sat in the circle of flowers at the edge of the almost circle of water in the cave.

  • (Kk)

Darkfang sat with her head hung low in the circle of flowers while her fur was shimmering in the moonlight. "StarClan, I trust Lightkit and Graykit are safe with you. Please don't let them fade ever." The she cat meowed in her deep feminine voice to Starclan, "They were too young..." a single tear fell from her blue and red eyes as Darkfang got up and left the cave when the moonlight moved away. Her gray paws landed on something sticky and thick, so she looked down and saw blood trailing away from camp. The dark gray deputy ran along the trail of blood, only to find the source was an intruding fox!

  • foreverheart came to Darkfang and smelt the air.... "It's a fox." said foreverheart.

  • Lyriumpaw padded to her brother, grinning from ear to ear. "Brother, do you kno what day it is?" She aske,d hoping he would remember. "Of course I do, Lyrium. Time for your ceremony. AND, here have this. I found it while I was traveling." Cavestar mewed, his eyes softened as he stroked his sister's head, ruffling her fur before hugging her tight. The gift was marvelous, a feathe,r but not just a feather, a feather dipped in gold and silver, giving it an extraordinary look. She was so excited for her ceremony, even if she was supposed to be a warrior 8 moons ago, she trained longer and harder, until she mastered most.

Leafpool thrashed wildly with her claws and managed to clutch the edge of the rock. But she couldn't get a grip with her hindpaws to thrust herself back to safety. There was a noise above her, and she looked up, terrified that she would see another Shadowclan warrior coming to finish her off.

Crowfeather gazed down at her, his eyes wide with horror.

“Crowfeather,” Leafpool hissed through gritted teeth, in case the movement sent her plummeting down after the two Shadowclan cats. “Crowfeather, help me!”

The Windclan warrior didn’t move. The rock where Leafpool clung was wet from the rain, and she felt her claws begin to slip. “Crowfeather!” she begged. “I’m going to fall!”

Crowfeather stood as if frozen. A hoarse whisper came from him, but his gaze was blank, and Leafpool realized he wasn’t talking to her at all. “Feathertail, I’m sorry! It was all my fault. I shouldn’t have let you fall.”

Leafpool realized he was remembering the cave in the mountains where Feathertail had died. “It wasn’t your fault,” she mewed. “Help me, Crowfeather, please.” She felt her claws slip again and tried to dig them in deeper, but there was nothing to grip on the slick surface of the rock.

Slowly Crowfeather took a pace forward and leaned over. Leafpool gasped as she felt her claws give away, but in the same heartbeat his teeth met her scruff. For a moment they both teetered on the edge of the cliff, and she felt his weight slide toward her. Then Crowfeather heaved himself, his hindpaws scrabbling in the earth, and hauled Leafpool up over the edge. Both cats collapsed, panting. Leafpool let her cheek rest against the solid ground, knowing she had been a whisker from falling to her death. Crowfeather lay beside her, his flanks heaving. Their eyes met, and Leafpool found she could not look away.

    “Thank you.” She mewed.

“I did it,” Crowfeather whispered. “I saved you.”

The air between them crackled like lightning. Trying to lighten the atmosphere, Leafpool commented, “I must be the last cat you would want to save.”

“Is that what you think?” Crow feather’s gaze burned into her. “Don’t you know how I feel about you? And how much I hate myself for feeling that way about another cat so soon after Feathertail’s death? I loved her, I really did! How can I love you too?”

    “Me? But-“

“You walk my dreams, Leafpool,” Crowfeather whispered.

“No,” Leafpool breathed. “You can’t love me. I’m a medicine cat.” And I can’t love you, she thought desperately. But she knew that she did, more then she ever thought possible. To hear he loved her too was what she wanted more than anything else.

“Leafpool! Are you there, Leafpool?” Two cats were running up the edge of the hollow, and a moment later Cloudtail and Brightheart thrust their way among the thorns.

Leafpool and Crowfeather scrambled to their paws. “I’m over here!” Leafpool called.

Cloudtail rushed over to her, his tail fluffed out. “Are you okay?” he demanded. “Is this cat on our side or theirs?” He flicked his tail at Crowfeather.

    Crowfeather began to bristle.

“I’m fine,” Leafpool meowed hastily. “And Crowfeather’s a friend. He was chasing two Shadowclan warriors. Don’t claw him, Cloudtail, please. He saved me from falling over the edge.”

The white warrior’s eyes narrowed. “Good.”

“What happened to the Shadowclan cats?” Crowfeather asked.

“They’re dead.” Brightheart ducked under a branch to join her Clanmates. “They broke their necks.”

Leafpool shivered, knowing how easily that could have been her neck, snapped in the plunge from the top of the rocks. Crowfeather gave her another searching look, then dipped his head to Cloudtail. “I’ll go, then. When I left our camp, the fight was breaking up. Onewhisker is still leader of Windclan.”

What about-“ Cloudtail began, but Crowfeather had already vanished among the trees.

Brightheart nudged her mate. “Come on; we must get back to the camp. And lets hope we don’t have any more unexpected visitors.”

For a moment Leafpool stared at the spot where Crowfeather had dissapeared, before she turned and padded slowly after her Clanmates. She had nearly been killed by Shadowclan warriors attacking their camp, but she felt as if her paws walked on the wind, and her head was full of

Brambleclaw glanced across at Leafpool, who was still crouched beside Ashfur. When she heard Firestar, she raised her head and stared across the clearing at the WindClan warriors. Brambleclaw felt a stab of sympathy as her gaze sought out one in particular. Two days ago, Crowfeather and Leafpool had abandoned their Clans so that they could be together, but news of the badger attack had brought them home again. Brambleclaw hoped that Leafpool had come home for good; ThunderClan needed her more then ever now that so many cats had been wounded in the badger attack.

Crowfeather was staring down at his paws as if he were deliberately avoiding Leafpool's gaze. Fur was mizzing from a broad scratch on his flank, but the wound had stopped bleeding and he stood with his weight on all four paws. Webfoot had a torn ear, and the WindClan deputy Ashfoot was bleeding from one shoulder, but none of the wounds looked serious enough to stop the warriors from returning to the WindClan camp.

"I think we're all fit to travel, thank StarClan," Onestar answered the ThunderClan leader. "If you're sure you don't need our help anymore, we'll return to our own territory now."

Crowfeather raised his head and shot one despairing glance at Leafpool. She scrambled to her paws, leaving Ashfur, and padded across to meet the WindClan warrior. They stood a little away from the other cats, their heads close together. Standing in the shadows, Brambleclaw couldn't help overhearing, but he didn't want to disturb them by moving

"Good-bye, Crowfeather," Leafpool murmured, sounding choked with pain. "We...we'd better not see each other again."

Crowfeather's eyes flashed, and for a heartbeat Brambleclaw thought he was going to protest. Then he shook his head. "You're right," he meowed. "It would never have worked. I will never mean enough to you."

Leafpool sank her claws into the ground. "You mean more to me then you will ever know."

The tip of Crowfeather's black tail twitched. "You're a medicine cat. I understand what that means now. StarClan go with you, Leafpool. I'll never forget you."

He and Leafpool touched noses, a delicate contact that lasted less then a heartbeat. Then Crowfeather turned back to his Clanmates. Leafpool watched him go, her eyes clouded with loss.
