  • The kit smiled. "Can I come?" he asked, bouncing on his toes. he was obviously one of the younger kits.

  • ''Yeah!'' His ears twitched with excitement. He had finally made a friend. ''Let's go!'' He sprinted on his little paws, stumbling once or twice. He approached it, excited- until he saw other kits there. But he didn't mind. They could share the cave, couldn't they? He waddled in until another kit, slightly older than him with black fur and a white mask, pushed him. ''This is our cave,'' he growled. Sparkkit backed up, fur rising on his neck. He was a little afraid. ''Who are you to t-t-tell me this is your cave?'' Sparkkit mewed. Another kit approached. ''Your mama's a kittypet, and kittypets aren't allowed here,'' the kit snarled. Sparkkit trembled. ''Aw look, the little kittypet's crying!'' He taunted. Sparkkit shook more. ''I-I'm not a kittyp-'' The kit pushed him away hard. ''Get out of here,'' he snarled.

Mist watched him go, blinking softly.

  • Basilkit, the small creamy brown kit from before, stepped in front of Spark-kit. "Leave him alone, bullies!" he said.

  • Basilkit bushed up and stuck his tongue out at them.

  • The mean kits mother had stopped by the den. ''Come on,'' she told the kits. ''Time for your training to become apprentices,'' she mewed proudly. The two kits, named Raggedkit and Shadowkit, stuck their tongues out back and stalked off. Sparkkit muttered, ''What meanies. At least we have the cave to ourselves now.''

  • Basilkit nodded and cringed from the kit's mother. He turned to Spark-kit. "You okay?" he asked.

  • Basilkit sighed. "Their father is the deputy. The kits think they can do anything they want because of that." he said.

  • Sparkkit was furious, you could tell by the look in his eyes. ''That's just dumb,'' he mewed.

Mist got up to eat some freshkill, but there was hardly any left. Spottedleaf, a warrior, suggested she should go hunting with the patrol. She nodded and ran into the forest.

  • Steelblade sat outside the den and stretched.

Basilkit nodded sadly. "By the way, I'm Basilkit." he said.

  • ''I'm Sparkkit,'' he mewed. ''Wanna be friends?'' His eyes glinted for a moment with hope.

Mist took the opportunity to clear her head in the forest. She crouched down, thinking about the future, but was so deep in thought she had let the rabbit get away. ''Foxdung,'' she muttered.

  • "Sure." Basilkit squeaked.

  • ''Yay!'' he squealed. He tumbled out of the cave and looked around. ''What should we do, Basilkit?'' he asked.

Mist lashed out a paw and got a big, rainbow silver fish. She gripped its tough tail with her teeth and brought it to shore.

  • Steelblade padded into the woods.

Basilkit shrugged. 'I dunno, we can explore the cave." he said.

  • ''Okay!'' He turned around. ''There...doesn't seem to be very much..'' he mewed.

Two cats padded to the river, snarling, their fur puffing up. ''Prey-stealer! That's Riverclan's food!'' They hissed. Startled, Mist leaped and sprinted away back to camp.

  • Steelblade yelped in surprise as Mist crashed into him.

Basilkit twitched his tail. "Follow me. The older kits have never found this out. I've kept it a secret." he said, padding towards the back of the cave.
