  • Flight stepped outside the cave, shivering in anticipation as a breeze stirred her fur. Finally. She had waited her whole life for this, and now she felt a trill of pleasure at her liberty. Pleasure, and... was there something else? Nervousness? She shoved it down, whatever it was, and glanced behind her, her grin taking on a softer note. For her first venture outside the cave, she had brought her littermate, Sundiata. His was a unique case; the tom aged backward, and at the moment he was roughly the age of a five-moon-old kit.

Sundiata pranced from the cave, basking briefly in the sunshine that broke through the trees. He could no longer train due to her condition, and so, still being a Future, could not leave the cave without an escort. He was proud of his sister, even if he didn't fully understand what she had accomplished- toms and she-cats were roughly equal in his juvenile eyes. He was mainly happy to be out in the sun again.

"Hey, Flight and Sundiate!" the brown tabby called out, padding out of the cave with a slight spring in his steps. Though he was sexist, the tom considered this she-cat to have deserved her title.

But that wasn't the thing that was taking up the most of his thoughts--he was thinking about the idea of orchestrating an eyeball hunt, to take the place of the Pro-Clanners obsession with eggs this time of the year. Though he hadn't finalized his plans, they were lingering in the back of his mind; at this point, he considered them to be nothing but toy-thoughts that he would discard and not attempt--little did he know that he'd actually do it later on.

"I'm glad the weather is pleasant today--it suits what should be your first steps of freedom," he remarked, his amber eyes turning upward to watch the swaying tree-tops in the breeze. I take advantage of days like these all the time. Perhaps I shouldn't, he thought to himself. Or maybe that was just the damaged whispering in his ear again.

  • "Hey, Collateraldamage!" Flight called pleasantly, smiling at the tom. He seemed nice- she remembered him cheering her promotion and then walking up to talk to her. She'd seen him around camp on occasion, and he didn't seem very sympathetic to she-cats, but that was natural behavior to her. "I'll say," she continued, scanning the bright surroundings. "Care to join us?"

Sundiata smiled indiscriminately at the tom, pleased at the cheerful greeting.

"Sure," he stated, his tone not at all mocking--it would be a good day to go out and do some sort of patrol. He glanced at Sundiate, noting that perhaps border patrol wouldn't be too great with the kit--even if he wasn't really a kit? But Damage didn't think about that; it made his head spin a bit.

"We could go hunting--I'll help you out, if you want," he offered, not completely sure if the former peasant had the skill, after being in the cave almost all her life. Turning to the small tom in the group, "Fine with you?"
    [/fancypost]

    [/fancypost]

    [/fancypost]

  • "Of course." Flight dipped her head, inviting the tom to lead the way. She still wasn't accustomed to being on the same level as males; this would take some getting used to. But she didn't mentally curse herself for slipping. He probably knew the territory ten times better than she did, and she would rather ease her way into this rank than jump in with all four paws.

  • [fancypost bgcolor=; bordercolor=; borderwidth=0px; font-family: DKFai-SB; font-size: 28px; margin-bottom: -13px; letter-spacing: 4px; text-align: right]Collateral Damage[/fancypost]

With a slight smile and nod, Damage took point, his pawsteps somewhat quick, but not much faster than a slightly fast walk. His eyes bright with the sunlight, he looked about the territory, his ears pricked for any sounds of prey or intruders. Glancing back at Flight, "See if you can help me find a nice, fat rabbit--we can catch the blasted thing together."Tasty, but so quick, he mentally complained to himself.

  • "Roger," Flight replied with an affirming nod. She began scanning the underbrush for rabbits, using scent to paint the picture her eyes only partially revealed.

Sundiata looked, too, with a juvenile eagerness that made him seem less than half his physical age. He loved hunting and chasing bunnies, even if he rarely caught them.

  • [fancypost bgcolor=; bordercolor=; borderwidth=0px; font-family: DKFai-SB; font-size: 28px; margin-bottom: -13px; letter-spacing: 4px; text-align: right]Collateral Damage[/fancypost]

With a responding nod, the brown tabby turned his gaze back to the path he walked, which he used his hearing to search for noises--he depended more on his ears than sense of smell, for the reason that he felt that smell didn't consider things that were just a tad out of reach.

That was not to say that he wasn't using his sense of smell; he weeded out the forest-caused noises with the prey-noises using that sense. It simply wasn't the one that he relied on the most.

With his paws hardly disturbing the ground, the brown tabby continued to search for the desired prey animal. His amber eyes looked to the young-looking tom, though out of the thought that he might act to quickly and startle any rabbit they came across. But he shrugged such a worry off--no cat could be that stupid, and there wouldn't be anything he could do quick enough if it happened.

  • Flight's attention was on Sundi, too, but mainly to look out for him. Thus, it was almost startling when the odor of rabbit snapped her back to her surroundings.
Tapping Collateraldamage on the shoulder with her tail, she whispered, "Rabbit," and pointed with her forepaw to a bush against a tree. She motioned for Sundi to get behind her, which he did abruptly.

  • [fancypost bgcolor=; bordercolor=; borderwidth=0px; font-family: DKFai-SB; font-size: 28px; margin-bottom: -13px; letter-spacing: 4px; text-align: right]Collateral Damage[/fancypost]

Alerted by Flight's tap, the brown tabby looked in the direction of her paw. Before he could even think of checking the air for the smell, the scent hit his nose in full force, making him wonder if he really should rely so much on hearing. But that was neither here nor there, so he pushed that thought aside quickly.

"Wait for me to creep up closer, and then flush it out," he whispered, whiskers twitching slightly in anticipation. What a fine catch it'll be, he thought to himself, sliding into a crouch easily and circling around, using the tree to hide his approach. When he was successfully in position, he looked back to Flight and gave an encouraging nod to show that he was ready.
    [/fancypost]

    [/fancypost]

    [/fancypost]

  • Flight nodded again, gestured for Sundi to be silent and still, and crouched to wait. When Collateraldamage gave the signal, she tensed and threw herself forward, scattering gorse and bracken in an exaggerated leap toward the bush. The clatter she made drove the animal out, running straight toward the tom. Flight hesitated, wondering whether she should go after it. She was unused to this kind of hunting after her long lapses in which she no longer left the cave. He seemed to be getting along well without her help, though, so she just waited rather than risk fumbling a catch.

  • [fancypost bgcolor=; bordercolor=; borderwidth=0px; font-family: DKFai-SB; font-size: 28px; margin-bottom: -13px; letter-spacing: 4px; text-align: right]Collateral Damage[/fancypost]

With a grin on his face, the brown tabby reached out to the rabbit, cutting open a jugular vein with a practiced swipe of his left forepaw--really, such quick cuts like those were his trademark, something that he had spent most of his training period learning how to do. So it was no surprise the rabbit spazzed out for a few seconds before collapsing to the ground in a matter of seconds.

"Thanks for the assist!" he cheered, grin morphing into a more pleasant smile as the young tom turned his gaze from the rabbit to the female. "Shall we head back to the cave with this, or continue?" he asked, wondering if she had enough stamina.
    [/fancypost]

    [/fancypost]

    [/fancypost]

  • "I'd like to continue, if that's okay with you." Far from tire her out, the thrill of the chase had momentarily pumped adrenaline into her. She hadn't realized how much she had missed hunting. She felt like a kit again, memories coming back to her of the hunt, long ago, on which she had met Nebuchadnezzar. "I know this one trail by a stream that leads to a lovely meadow with a bunch of birds, if you don't mind me trying to find it. I haven't been that way in a long while." Glancing around, Flight realized she didn't know exactly where they were.

  • [fancypost bgcolor=; bordercolor=; borderwidth=0px; font-family: DKFai-SB; font-size: 28px; margin-bottom: -13px; letter-spacing: 4px; text-align: right]Collateral Damage[/fancypost]

With a nod, the brown tabby felt somewhat relieved that the she-cat didn't want to turn back--it further proved that she indeed deserved the position, that she was capable and not as weak as one might imagine from most she-cats. Well, at least the idiots that he had come across; Honestly, some of them wouldn't know evil if it slapped them on the cheek, was his thought on the matter.

"Sure, we can go there," he said, kicking up some leaves to cover the rabbit--he'd come back for it later, for it was much too heavy to lug around the territory, even with another cat. "Trying to find it will probably help you learn the territory better--and I'll tag along just to make sure you don't get lost." He said that last part with a flourishing, teasing tone that was so obviously a joke, though it did have a ring of truth to it, in his opinion.
    [/fancypost]

    [/fancypost]

  • Flight laughed, a confident, easy laugh that didn't betray the nervousness she felt at leading. Peering off into the trees, she padded toward the direction she thought the clearing was in, praying to Fortis that it was the right one.

  • [fancypost bgcolor=; bordercolor=; borderwidth=0px; font-family: DKFai-SB; font-size: 28px; margin-bottom: -13px; letter-spacing: 4px; text-align: right]Collateral Damage[/fancypost]

Twitching his whiskers slightly at her laugh, he fell in step behind her, a bit slowly. Taking a deep breath with his eyes-half closed, the tom recognized traces of the scents of birds, maybe even some hinds to water. But it was a bit too faint to see where it was coming from. Besides, he wanted to see how well this she-cat did in this somewhat unfamiliar territory.
    [/fancypost]

    [/fancypost]

    [/fancypost]

  • As she nosed through bushes and in between trees, Flight grew a little nervous. She wanted to prove herself, but she didn't seem to be doing a very good job of it so far. The terrain was unfamiliar after her long absence from the outside world. She began relying more on smell and hearing than on sight.
The bubbling of slowly running water reached her ear just as she caught the pure smell of meadow grass, and she glanced behind her, eyes bright with triumph. "It's just up ahead."

  • [fancypost bgcolor=; bordercolor=; borderwidth=0px; font-family: DKFai-SB; font-size: 28px; margin-bottom: -13px; letter-spacing: 4px; text-align: right]Collateral Damage[/fancypost]

Catching that look of triumph in her eyes, the brown tabby just managed to stifle an amused purr--it would do to have her think that he mocked her. He just found it kind of amusing how she found such happiness in what he considered a small feat, that's all. "How much farther?" he asked, sniffing the air and drawing his own conclusions. But helping Flight get back on track with smart questions like that were key right now.

At least, that's what the damaged whispered in his ear.
    [/fancypost]

    [/fancypost]

    [/fancypost]

  • "Just ahead," Flight meowed confidently. "I recognize this stream, and the meadow's just beyond. We're more or less here."
Padding forward, she hopped the stream- did it really seem so huge all those moons ago?- and crept forward into the meadow, which was more of a clearing now that she was older. It was brightly lit, which made her all-black pelt stand out against the tall heather.

  • [fancypost bgcolor=; bordercolor=; borderwidth=0px; font-family: DKFai-SB; font-size: 28px; margin-bottom: -13px; letter-spacing: 4px; text-align: right]Collateral Damage[/fancypost]

With a semi-automatic, slight nod, the brown tabby continued to follow her. But while she crept forward, he trotted into the clearing, his tail flicking through the air slightly. His senses had told him that nothing was hear but for the natural things (no BoneClan cats hiding behind something), and so was fairly confident. Besides, they had already caught something quite large and substantive--so it seemed that the rest of the day would be spent with Flight, to show her the territory. Glancing around the luminous area, his amber eyes blinked slightly at the slight harshness of the light. "This what you were looking for?"
